Last June, the Department of Agriculture released its 2011 report about the cost of raising a child to age 18. They calculated “a middle-income family with a child born in 2010 can expect to spend about $226,920 ($286,860 if projected inflation costs are factored in) for food, shelter, and other necessities to raise that child over the next 17 years.” To plug in your own special needs numbers – depending on how brave you feel – go to Expenditures on Children by Families. But if you’re not feeling brave, stay right here and check out free stuff for parents like you.
