Medical Debt and Kids with Special Needs
Our son’s first medical bills arrived over 29 years ago, and I’m still recovering from the sticker shock. $50,000 was a fortune for a couple earning less than $20,000 annually. In the years since, the cost of caring for medically fragile kids has sky rocketed. How do parents deal with the astronomical bills for kids today?
Praying for Parker
Tammy at www.prayingforparker.com addressed the issue of medical debt in one of her November posts. They are a middle class family with insurance. Yet, they nearly lost their home because of medical debt. Turns out there’s not a lot of assistance for families in their economic group.
Strategies for Dealing with Debt
In the post, Tammy outlined some of the strategies she and her husband are using to deal with debt. Here’s a quick summary of a few of them:
- Staying within the grocery budget by using coupons and cooking from scratch.
- Selling stuff.
- Living with less.
- Paying down debt whenever extra money comes in.
- Focusing on people rather than stuff.
- Taking better care of stuff so it lasts longer.
