5 Travel Tips for Parents of Kids with Special Needs
![]()
Somewhere in the midst of our July travels, a nifty article about traveling with kids who have special needs popped up on a google alert. I saved it until we got home safe and sound to share with you before summer is completely gone.
Washington Post Lifestyle Blog
The article was published on the Washington Post’s website, by Mari-Jane Williams, one of their Lifestyle section bloggers. Most of the experts quoted were from the autism branch of the special needs community, but most of them apply to kids with other disabilities, illnesses, or conditions.
Mari-Jane’s 5 Tips
Very briefly, the four tips are:
- Choose your destination wisely
- Use social stories
- Take advantage of special accommodations
- Take a practice trip
- Pack the comforts of home
As you can see, the tips are uber-sensible, and the author fleshes them out with details and oodles of links at www.washingtonpost.com. If you are planning a trip yet this summer or thinking about one for next summer, this article could be very helpful.

Here’s a great tip from Harriet Cabelly I’m still working on the spam snafu so she can post for herself:
Try to keep to some routine as much as possible. I know the whole point of a vacation is to be able to be more flexible and spontaneous; but I found the more we kept to some semblance of predictability and structure, the easier it was for all.
